Pat Robson BEM
Charity Chairman and Managing Director of The Harbour Gallery Jersey
Pat trained in Art Textiles at Eastbourne when Art Textiles were really making their mark at Goldsmiths College, London. An inspirational tutor from Goldsmiths tutored at Eastbourne College of Education during Pat’s 2nd and 3rd years enforcing her love of both art and textiles. Having trained as a teacher for art and textiles after spending her early years teaching in the UK, Pat returned to live and teach art in Jersey. During this early teaching period, Pat designed and made one-off stunning wedding dresses.
Having a break from teaching, Pat opened a children’s clothes shop where she designed the clothes and had a team of ladies making them up. Starting a family, Pat went back to teaching and for 22 years was Head of Art at Beaulieu Convent School, soon adding Art Textiles to the GCSE and A level timetables. Sending many very talented students to Art College and finding that there was very little for them to come home for in Jersey, Pat together with Elizabeth Le Gal, Art Co-ordinator for the Beaulieu Primary School, set up Art in the Frame 20 years ago, to help these young graduates and emerging local artists and craftworkers exhibit their work. Art in the Frame Foundation took on Charitable Status 18 years ago with Lady Cheshire becoming Patron.
Pat and Elizabeth took on The Harbour Gallery, the ‘window’ to Art in the Frame, and ‘grew it,’ enlarging it every couple of years and building a well needed café and workspace. In November 2012 The Harbour Gallery celebrated it’s 10th birthday with a big party and a wonderful birthday exhibition officially opened by the then-Patron Lady Gene McColl and her husband Sir John McColl, the Governor of the Island of Jersey. Sadly Elizabeth retired at the end of the year and Pat has taken over, running the Gallery on a voluntary basis.
The Harbour Gallery desk is manned entirely by volunteers and exhibiting artists, many who have been with us for the 15 years of the gallery. This ‘army’ of ladies and gentlemen help to make the welcoming atmosphere awaiting visitors at The Harbour Gallery.
Volunteers sit for 3 hours at the desk 10.00am – 1.00pm or 1.00pm – 4.00pm with the last 1 1/2 hours done by the manager/s or an artist or volunteer. Volunteers get free coffee or tea on each session, Christmas presents and a party.
If you are interested in volunteering, please leave your name at the desk or email firstname.lastname@example.org
In 2017, Pat was presented with a British Empire Medal by His Excellency Sir Stephen Dalton in recognition of all of the work she has done for Jersey.
Pictured here is our charity Patron Lady Dalton with her husband His Excellency the Lieutenant-Governor Sir Stephen Dalton.
Lady Dalton has a great interest in stitching and we are very honoured when she visits the gallery to attend workshops led by Elizabeth Le Gal for Mencap and Les Amis clients.
